About Chilton
Chilton's first settlers were Moses Stanton, a formerly enslaved African American man, and his Native American wife Catherine, who arrived in January 1845; the town grew up around his sawmill and was first called Stantonville. When John Marygold bought the place in 1852, a slip in recording his chosen name left it as Chilton, and the next year it became the seat of Calumet County. The copper-domed county courthouse has stood on Court Street since 1913, and the South Branch of the Manitowoc River winds through town. Each June the four-day Summer Festival ends with one of the country's largest Father's Day parades, and each September the Crafty Apple Fest brings more than 200 crafters and an apple pie contest.
