About Lincoln Village
Lincoln Village was built by Milwaukee's Polish community in the late 1800s, and its main street, West Lincoln Avenue, still shows Polish gables and fine old details. The parish of St. Josaphat began in 1888, and in 1901 its families finished a great basilica built partly from a Chicago post office they bought and took apart, crowned by a copper dome 250 feet high. Today most neighbors have roots in Jalisco and Michoacan in Mexico, and Lincoln Avenue mixes Mexican and Polish shops, a big bicycle shop and family restaurants. Kosciuszko Park, which locals call Kosy, has a lagoon, soccer fields and a water park, and a monument to the Polish hero Tadeusz Kosciuszko stands by the avenue.
