About Columbus
Columbus began in 1838 and 1839, when Elbert Dickason built a log cabin on the bank of the Crawfish River and Lewis Ludington bought land beside him; Dickason named the settlement after Christopher Columbus. The railroad arrived in 1857 and made it a shipping town for grain and dairy, and it became a city in 1874, the years when much of its cream-brick downtown went up. On the main corner stands the Farmers and Merchants Union Bank, a small 'jewel box' bank designed by the famous architect Louis Sullivan in 1919 and now a National Historic Landmark. Known as the Redbud City for the purple-flowering trees along Dickason Boulevard, Columbus fills its May calendar with Redbud Days, then turns out for a big Fourth of July parade, an October wine walk and a December holiday train.
