About Menahga
Menahga was laid out in 1891, and its name comes from an Ojibwe word meaning that there are many blueberries; the Blueberry River still runs just north of town. In 2000 about four in ten people here reported Finnish roots, and Menahga calls itself the Home of St. Urho, the made-up Finnish saint said to have chased the grasshoppers out of Finland. A 12-foot statue of St. Urho holding a pitchfork with a grasshopper on it stands along Highway 71, and each March 16 the town celebrates St. Urho's Day with a parade and costume contests in purple and green. The cartoonist Wallace Wood, one of the first artists of Mad magazine, was born here in 1927.
