About Park Rapids

Park Rapids sits beside the Fish Hook River rapids in Hubbard County, and Frank C. Rice named it for the park-like groves and prairies there. It began as a supply stop for farmers, trappers and loggers, and its main street was made extra wide so long teams of horses could turn around. The city was incorporated in 1890. Today people come for the 70-plus nearby lakes, the start of the Heartland Trail, and the gateway to Itasca State Park, where the Mississippi begins.
