About Staples
Staples grew around a sawmill and was platted in 1889 as Staples Mill, named for the lumbermen Samuel and Isaac Staples. The railroad is still central: the daily Empire Builder stops at the depot, and two BNSF lines meet in town. Downtown has the Batcher Opera House Block, built in 1907, where plays were staged upstairs until the 1920s. Neighbors now go to community theater, the Opera House concerts, chamber events and Railroad Days each August.
