About New York Mills
Finnish settlers began arriving around New York Mills in 1874, and the town was platted in 1883 along the railroad. Finnish ways stayed strong here: a Finnish-language paper was printed in town until 1985, saunas are common, and Finn Creek Open Air Museum keeps a 1900 farmstead with log barns and a smoke sauna a few miles southeast. In 1947 Howard Lund built his first metal boat in a local garage, and the boat company grew into the area's biggest employer. In 1992 volunteers turned an old downtown store into the Regional Cultural Center, home of the Great American Think-Off, a yearly debate on a big question. Summers bring Lund Mania with fish houses painted on Main Avenue, and winters bring the week-long Christmas Tree Festival in the City Hall Ballroom.
