About Whitefish Bay
Menominee, Potawatomi and Sauk people lived along this stretch of the Lake Michigan shore before farmers and fishing families, many of them German, settled here in the 1800s. In 1889 brewer Frederick Pabst opened a lakeside resort with a beer garden, a bandshell and later a Ferris wheel, and crowds came out from Milwaukee by steamboat and train. When the Town of Milwaukee would not build a school nearby, residents formed their own village in 1892 so they could start their own school district. Today it is a tree-lined village of old houses and lakefront parks, with families walking to the shops and cafes of Silver Spring Drive.
