About Stoughton

Stoughton was founded in 1847 by Luke Stoughton, an Englishman from Vermont, on the Yahara River southeast of Madison. Many Norwegian immigrants settled here from 1865 into the early 1900s, and that heritage still shows in Norwegian flags around town and the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers from the high school. The town says it is where the coffee break began, when women filling in at the tobacco warehouses asked to go home morning and afternoon for chores and coffee. Today people come downtown for the Syttende Mai festival each May, shows at the restored 1901 Opera House with its clock tower, and the Victorian Holiday Weekend in December.
