About Fitchburg
Fitchburg began as farm country south of Madison: John Stoner opened the first farm in 1837, and the Vroman brothers from the Netherlands settled for good in 1839. The town was formed in 1847 as Greenfield and was renamed Fitchburg in 1853, after Fitchburg, Massachusetts, to stop mail mix-ups with another Greenfield. Irish families fleeing the potato famine started settlements like the Fox Settlement, and wheat farms later turned to dairy. Fitchburg became a city in 1983 and still keeps farmland in the south, so today families bike the Badger State Trail, picnic at McKee Farms Park and shop the Thursday farmers market at the Agora.
