About Montrose
Montrose was platted in 1878 and became a village in 1881, on the road that later became U.S. Highway 12. Its first post office opened in the home of George Wright, who is named as its first settler. Fires in the 1930s destroyed most of the shops on Railroad Street, so the business district moved out to the highway. In 1897 Dr. E.P. Hawkins began his practice here, and his 1903 hospital was the first in Wright County. Today the city of about 3,800 is surrounded by farmland and lakes, and volunteers such as the Lions and the fire department run many of its events.
