About Sherwood
Sherwood began as a crossroads in the Town of Harrison and takes its name from a Civil War veteran who drove a stagecoach and later kept a tavern here. It became a village in 1968 with about 350 people and has grown to more than 3,200. Just south of town, High Cliff State Park climbs the limestone ledge of the Niagara Escarpment above the northeast corner of Lake Winnebago. From 1856 to 1956 workers quarried that stone and burned lime in kilns there, and the old 1855 general store is now a small museum. Families climb the park's observation tower for the view, walk among effigy mounds built 1,000 to 1,500 years ago, and hike, camp and boat along the lake.
