About Detroit Lakes
Detroit Lakes was founded in 1871 and was a resting place on the Red River Oxcart Trails. The railroad helped it grow fast, and by 1877 it was the county seat. Its name comes from a French word for a strait, which describes the sandbar between Big Detroit Lake and Little Detroit Lake. Today summer visitors come for the lakes and the mile-long city beach, and the Art Deco Holmes Theatre hosts shows all year. Every August the town hosts WE Fest, a three-day country music and camping festival.
