About Waukesha
Waukesha grew up on the Fox River, and its name is thought to come from a native word for fox or from Wau-tsha, a Potawatomi leader the first settlers knew. Morris Cutler settled here in 1834, other farm families from New England followed, and the place first called Prairieville took the name Waukesha in 1847. After a spring water find in 1868, visitors poured in to drink the water, and the town became known as the Spring City; Carroll, the oldest college in Wisconsin, had already opened here in 1846. Guitar maker and recording pioneer Les Paul was born here in 1915, and today families walk the River Walk, browse the Saturday farmers market downtown, and hear music on Main Street at Friday Night Live.
