About Paynesville
Paynesville was platted in 1857 by Edwin E. Payne and still carries his name. When the railroads came in 1886, a new settlement called Jim Town grew up where downtown is now, and it later joined the older settlements to become one Paynesville. In 1949 ice cream making was the town's leading trade, so its summer festival began as Ice Cream Days; it became Town and Country Days in 1961 and still fills a week each June. Today people swim at Veteran's Park, bike the 16-mile trail around Lake Koronis, and visit the area historical museum with its restored country schoolhouse.
