About Rockville
Rockville was laid out in 1856 and named for the granite rock along nearby streams, and it has had a post office since 1857. Granite made the town: in 1907 John Clark and John McCormick opened a quarry here that supplied stone for the Cathedral of Saint Paul. By 1918 it was the biggest maker of building granite in Minnesota, and its pinkish-gray stone went into buildings across the country. Stonecutters from Scotland and Scandinavia were so many that they played soccer on Main Street after work. In 2002 the city joined with Pleasant Lake and Rockville Township,, and the granite John Clark House still stands across the highway from the old quarry.
