About Litchfield
The railroad came through here in 1869, and the town site was laid out that year. Settlers had first called the place Ness, after a parish in Norway, but the village chose the name of a railroad investor, Litchfield, and was chartered in 1872. Farming and farm-related business grew the town, and Sibley Avenue still has an unusually whole downtown of brick shops built between 1882 and 1940. People enjoy Lake Ripley and Central Park, which has a bandstand.
