About Pelican Rapids
Pelican Rapids grew up beside the rapids of the Pelican River, where settlers built the first cabins in 1869 and a sawmill soon after. The village was platted in 1872, the railroad came from Fergus Falls in 1882, and the town was incorporated the next year. Farming, and later turkey processing, kept it busy, and in 1957 the town built Pelican Pete, a 15-foot concrete pelican that still stands by the river. Today people walk the suspension bridge between E.L. Peterson and Sherin parks, camp by the river, and ride the Heart of the Lakes Trail toward Maplewood State Park.
