About Barnesville
Barnesville grew up as a railroad town on the edge of the Red River Valley, where the old bed of glacial Lake Agassiz left rich black soil. Trains first reached it in 1877, and by 1890 the town had railroad repair shops, a roundhouse and more than a thousand people. When the shops moved away in 1907, farming carried the town, and seed potatoes became a big crop around 1908. People still celebrate that crop every August at Potato Days, with potato picking and peeling contests and a lefse cook-off, and the Clay County Fair has been held here every July since 1914.
