About Phillips
Phillips, just south of downtown, is named for Wendell Phillips, a 19th-century abolitionist, and since 2002 it has been four neighborhoods: Ventura Village, Phillips West, Midtown Phillips and East Phillips. Swan Turnblad, a Swedish immigrant who published a Swedish-language newspaper, built a castle-like mansion here in 1908 that is now the American Swedish Institute. Franklin Avenue is Ventura Village's main street, where Franklin Library has served readers since 1914. On Lake Street, the giant 1928 Sears building sat empty for years before it reopened in 2005 as the Midtown Exchange, home of the Midtown Global Market's small food stalls and shops, right beside the Midtown Greenway bike trail. Today Phillips is one of the city's most diverse areas, with people from many nations and the Little Earth community, home to Native American families from many tribes.
