About Longfellow

Longfellow is named for the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose poem The Song of Hiawatha made nearby Minnehaha Falls famous. Most of its homes went up between 1906 and the 1920s, when streetcar lines reached the area, and many of the first owners were Scandinavian families moving out from Cedar-Riverside. East Lake Street is its main street, with the 1924 East Lake Library building and the 1917 Coliseum Building, and Christ Church Lutheran, a famous modern church by Eliel Saarinen, stands a few blocks south. To the east the neighborhood ends at the Mississippi River gorge, where neighbors hold a free River Gorge Festival with canoe rides and river walks each September.
