About Cedar-Riverside

Cedar-Riverside, also called the West Bank, sits in a bend of the Mississippi just south of downtown, and it has long been a first home for newcomers. In the late 1800s Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, Germans and Bohemians filled its blocks, and Cedar Avenue became the heart of the city's Scandinavian life, with dance halls, theaters and shops where people spoke their home languages. In the 1960s and 70s it was a lively place for folk music, artists and students, and in 1973 the tall Riverside Plaza towers, with their bright colored panels, opened beside it. Today the University of Minnesota's West Bank campus and Augsburg University sit here, light rail stops at the West Bank and Cedar-Riverside stations, and it is home to the largest immigrant community in the Twin Cities, many of them Somali families, with cafes, restaurants and music venues along Cedar and Riverside avenues.
