About Elliot Park
Elliot Park is one of the oldest parts of Minneapolis, with house lots laid out as early as 1856 near the busy mills along the Mississippi, and many early Swedish newcomers settled here. It takes its name from Dr. Joseph Elliot, a local doctor who gave his farmland to the city for a park. Rich families first built big houses along Park Avenue, and later the blocks filled with three- and four-story brick apartment buildings. Its streets sit where the downtown grid meets the south Minneapolis grid, so the neighborhood is full of odd triangle corners. Today it is home to North Central University, the Hennepin County Medical Center, old landmarks like the 1897 First Church of Christ, Scientist, and a park at its heart.
