About Powderhorn

Powderhorn takes its name from Powderhorn Lake, which was curved like an old gunpowder horn until its northern arm was filled in the 1920s. The Park Board made the lakeshore a park in 1887, and by 1920 the land around it had filled with houses, duplexes and three-story brick apartment buildings. The park sits in a low bowl, with ball fields, a recreation center, fishing from the shore and skating on the lake in winter. Every May the MayDay parade ends here, when a sun puppet crosses the lake by boat and a Tree of Life is raised on the west hillside, and an art fair circles the lake in summer. Lake Street, the neighborhood's north edge, is lined with Latino- and African American-owned shops and restaurants.
