About Pine Island
Pine Island was platted in 1856 on the Middle Fork of the Zumbro River, and its post office has run since that same year. Its name comes from a Dakota name, Wazi Wita, which means Island of Pines, for a cluster of pines at a bend in the river. The town grew up on farming and now many neighbors drive to work in Rochester. Frank Van Horn's gift paid for the town library, which opened in 1918 and still follows its original two-week loan. Downtown has a 1909 city hall and an 1895 opera house block on the National Register.
