About Kingfield

Kingfield is named for Colonel William S. King, whose big Lyndale farm gave Lyndale Avenue its name. It was farm country until Minneapolis pushed its border south to 54th Street in 1887, and most of its Colonial Revival houses and Craftsman bungalows went up between 1903 and 1914, with the blocks south of 40th Street filling in after World War I. The Church of the Incarnation has stood at 38th Street and Pleasant Avenue since 1918, and Martin Luther King Park, once called Nicollet Field, still has a 1926 mural on its park building. Small local businesses line Nicollet Avenue, and every June the free Kingfield PorchFest turns dozens of front porches into music stages for one evening.
