About Westmorland
Westmorland is a near west side neighborhood between Mineral Point Road and the Southwest bike path, and from Midvale Boulevard east to Glenway Street. It began as the Westmorland Subdivision in 1926, and stone entry gates from that time still mark Westmorland Boulevard; the area was once a separate subdivision outside the city of Madison. In 1937 Frank Lloyd Wright finished a small L-shaped house here on Toepfer Avenue for the Jacobs family, often called his first Usonian home and now part of a World Heritage Site. The Westmorland Neighborhood Association began in 1941, making it one of the oldest in the city, and its first July 4th picnic that same year grew into a parade and party that once drew more than 3,000 people. At the heart of it all is Westmorland Park, with a playground, rock garden, a shelter with a working fireplace, and ice skating in winter.
