About Shorewood Hills
Shorewood Hills grew from a hillside called Mendota Heights above Lake Mendota, where a developer named McKenna laid out curving streets that follow the slope between 1922 and 1926, and it became its own village in 1927. Its homes show almost every style from those years, from Tudor houses with half-timbering to a Georgian house with a big arched window, and the neighborhood is now a National Historic District. The village is also home to Frank Lloyd Wright's Meeting House for the First Unitarian Society, a limestone church with a sharp copper roof that some say looks like hands folded in prayer. Families still turn out for a Fourth of July parade that goes back generations, with costumed kids on the march as far back as 1950.
