About Shell Lake
Shell Lake takes its name from its lake, where early visitors found the shells of freshwater clams along the shore. It has been a village since 1880, became a city in 1961, and is the county seat of Washburn County. The 2,580-acre lake sits right in the middle of town and is the largest landlocked seepage lake in Wisconsin, clear and about 36 feet deep at its deepest. The Shell Lake Arts Center has taught music and art here for more than 50 years and is home to the oldest jazz camp in the country still running. Today families swim at the beach, fish and sail on the lake, catch summer concerts at the Lakefront Pavilion, and come out for the July 3rd street dance and fireworks.
