About Frederic
Frederic became a village in 1901, the same year the Soo Line railroad put up a depot that had been built in its Minneapolis shops and shipped here by rail. A 1912 postcard shows Oak Street, the main business street, lined with shops and a hotel, with horse teams in the road. Passenger trains stopped running in 1961, and the old rail line is now the Gandy Dancer State Trail, a crushed-stone path for biking and hiking. The restored depot is a trail stop and museum, with a caboose, an 1885 log cabin and Frederic's first library on its grounds, and each year Frederic Family Days brings a classic car show and fireworks.
