About Spooner
Spooner began in the 1880s as a railroad junction where the North Wisconsin line met the Chicago and North Western, and it was named for John Coit Spooner, a railroad lawyer who later served in the U.S. Senate. It became a town in 1889 and a city in 1909, and its spot where U.S. Highways 53 and 63 meet gave it the nickname "Crossroads of the North." The old depot is now the Railroad Memories Museum, and excursion trains still roll out of town, including a Great Pumpkin train each fall. Families come for the Heart of the North Rodeo every July since 1954, the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum, nearby lakes and trails, and downtown festivals like Jack Pine Days and the Jack-O-Lantern Festival.
