About Rushford
Early settlers came up the Root River to where Rush Creek joins it, and on Christmas Day in 1854 they named their town Rushford after the rushes along the creek. The town boomed when it became the western end of the Southern Minnesota Railroad, and its 1867 two-story depot still stands where it was built, now a museum and visitor center. Rushford also built the well-known Rushford Wagon and ground flour at its 1875 city mill. Today the old rail bed is the Root River State Trail, and the town's name is spelled out in big white letters on Magelssen Bluff, a 440-foot hill right above town.
