About Spring Valley
Spring Valley began around 1857, when logging crews followed the Eau Galle River upstream from the sawmill town of Eau Galle. Iron ore found nearby started a pig iron industry in the early 1890s, and so many workers came to build the furnaces that a whole village grew up to serve them, incorporated in 1895. The river often flooded the narrow valley, so the Army Corps of Engineers built the Eau Galle Dam just north of town in the 1960s, and its lake, Lake George, is now a place to swim, fish and kayak. Families also tour Crystal Cave, open to visitors since 1942, fish the Eau Galle River for trout, and gather every year for Dam Days.
