About New Richmond
New Richmond began in 1857, when Hiram Foster led settlers from Vermont here for the timber and built a sawmill on the Willow River. It was first called Foster's Crossing, then named for Richmond Day, the surveyor who laid out the town, with 'New' added because Wisconsin already had a Richmond. The railroad came in 1871, and Irish, German, Norwegian and Swedish families joined the New Englanders. Today families walk the John Doar History Trail around the mill pond, tour the twelve old buildings of the Heritage Center, and fill downtown each July for Fun Fest's parade and carnival.
