About Ellsworth
Families began settling here in 1857, and the village sits on top of a steep ridge because of an 1861 compromise: Pierce County drew lines between its corners, and the new county seat went where they crossed. First called Perry, the town took the name Ellsworth in 1866 after Col. Elmer Ellsworth, an early Union officer of the Civil War. When the railroad came in 1885 it stopped a mile east at the bottom of the hill, and a second business district, East Ellsworth, grew up along Broadway Street. Farmers started the Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery in 1910, and today the town calls itself the Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin, with a Cheese Curd Festival in June, summer Thursday nights in East End Park and a farmers market.
