About River Falls

River Falls takes its name from the rapids of the Kinnickinnic River, a cold, clear trout stream that still runs right through downtown. Joel Foster settled here in 1848, and in 1854 the brothers Nathaniel and Oliver Powell started a village they first called Kinnickinnic. A state school for training teachers opened in 1874 and grew into the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and River Falls became a city in 1885. Today people fly-fish and paddle the 'Kinni,' cross the swinging bridge in Glen Park above the South Fork rapids, and pack Main Street each July for River Falls Days.
