About Durand
Durand began in 1856, when 21-year-old Miles Durand Prindle came up the Chippewa River in a keel boat called the Dutch Lady and claimed land where the city stands now. First called Bear Creek, it became a city in 1887 and is the county seat of Pepin County, about 15 miles up the Chippewa from the Mississippi. Its wooden 1874 courthouse, the only wood-framed courthouse left in Wisconsin, is now the Pepin County Heritage Center, where visitors can see the old courtroom and jail. The 1907 Carnegie library, built of local limestone with a red tile roof, still stands on Second Avenue, and today's Durand Community Library keeps the town's old newspapers, back to 1862, in a digital collection anyone can search.
