About St. Charles
St. Charles was laid out in 1854 along the Whitewater River, in a fertile valley among limestone bluffs, and the first railroad reached it in 1864. It grew as a farm town, and a local grower, Carl Fischer, made it famous for the gladiolus flowers he bred at Noweta Gardens. Today it calls itself the gateway to Whitewater State Park, seven miles north. Neighbors walk the river trails in City Park, visit the library, and fill the streets for Gladiolus Days each summer.
