About Starbuck
Starbuck began in the spring of 1882 as a stop on the new Little Falls and Dakota railroad, at the west end of Lake Minnewaska, and became a village on June 6, 1883. People still argue over the name: some say a pair of oxen called Star and Buck, but most local history buffs credit William H. Starbuck, a New York railroad backer. The town has a strong Norwegian heritage, and for its 100th birthday in 1983 the Lions baked the world's largest lefse, 9 feet 8 inches across and 70 pounds, on the depot grounds. Today people swim at the city beach, fish the lake, picnic in Lakeshore Park and fill the streets for Heritage Days and Lefse Dagen.
