About Oregon
Oregon began just south of today's village at Rome Corners, where Bartlett Runey built a log cabin in 1841 that became a tavern and inn and the place where the first wedding and church services were held. A post office opened in 1848, and the Chicago and North Western Railroad arrived in 1864. Its downtown keeps brick storefronts from 1877 to 1915, a World War I monument of polished granite raised in 1920, and a 100-foot water tower from 1899 that people call the Tin Man. Today families come out for Summer Fest at Kiser Firemen's Park and visit the Oregon Area Historical Society museum on Lincoln Street.
