About Trempealeau
Trempealeau sits on high banks along the Mississippi River, named for the cone-shaped island just upriver that the Ho-Chunk called the mountain soaking in the water, and French explorers called la montagne qui trempe a l'eau. Long before that, around 1050, people from the great Mississippian city of Cahokia may have settled here, and mounds they and older peoples built still stand nearby. In the 1840s James Reed started a river landing and fur trading post, and the village was laid out in 1852, keeping its row of 1880s to 1910s stores along Main Street. Today people come for the bluffs and trails of Perrot State Park, the wildlife refuge and the Great River bike trail, and the town turns out each July for Catfish Days.
