About Galesville
Galesville was laid out in 1854 by Judge George Gale, a judge from Vermont who bought 2,000 acres here to build a college, and the stone Old Main of his college, one of the oldest schools of higher learning in Wisconsin, still stands. Gale also set aside the town's public square, and today eighteen red brick shop buildings from 1875 to 1934 ring the Square and line Gale Avenue, once busy with trade from the flour mills a block away. A dam on Beaver Creek makes Lake Marinuka just north of town, where people fish, boat and ice fish, and the creek runs past parks with springs, cliffs and a trout pond. Every fall on the first Saturday in October the Apple Affair fills the Trempealeau County Fairgrounds with crafts, music and a 10-foot apple pie.
