About Viroqua
Viroqua began in 1844, when settlers built lumber mills in the area, and Moses Decker laid out the village a few years later; first called Farwell, it took the name Viroqua in 1854. In 1852 voters made it the seat of what is now Vernon County, and the stone courthouse with its bell tower went up in 1880. The town's tobacco warehouse became home to the nation's first tobacco growers' co-op in 1921. Today Viroqua is known for its busy historic Main Street, the restored 1922 Temple Theatre and the many organic farms around it, and families turn out for the Harvest Parade's giant puppets and the Twinklefest Parade of lights.
