About Washburn
Washburn sits on the shore of Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay, with the Chequamegon National Forest at its back. French explorers passed this shore in 1659, and in 1665 a Jesuit set up Wisconsin's first French mission a short way south of today's city. The city itself was founded in 1883 and named for Cadwallader C. Washburn, a former governor; sawmills lined its busy waterfront, and from 1905 a DuPont explosives plant outside town gave work as the timber ran low. It became the Bayfield County seat in 1892, and its brownstone courthouse, old bank and Carnegie library still stand downtown. Today the chamber calls it the Little Town on the Big Lake, a place for theater, music and galleries, and every five years thousands of people come home for its Homecoming weekend.
