About Silver Bay
Silver Bay was built from scratch in the early 1950s by Reserve Mining Company as a home for the workers at its new taconite plant on Lake Superior. Until May 1, 1954 it was called the Beaver Bay housing project, and the first ore pellets shipped out by boat in 1956, the same year the town voted to incorporate. In 1964 the Rocky Taconite statue was put up to mark Silver Bay as the 'Taconite Capital of the World', and the plant still makes iron ore pellets today. Now it is the biggest town in a North Shore area that includes Split Rock Lighthouse and Tettegouche State Park, with a marina, the Black Beach campground and trails, a hockey arena and ball fields for people who live and visit here.
