About Hurley
Hurley sits on the Montreal River across from Ironwood, Michigan, and it grew up in the 1880s iron mining and logging boom on the Gogebic Range. The town was laid out in 1884 and named for M.A. Hurley, a Wausau lawyer who asked only that the town carry his name as his fee for winning a case for an iron company. After fires in 1887 burned much of downtown, merchants rebuilt Silver Street in brick and stone, and in 1893 the town built a red brick hall with two towers that became the Iron County courthouse and is now the county history museum. Today families come for the Paavo Nurmi Marathon, the oldest marathon in Wisconsin, stroll Silver Street at Festival Italiano on Labor Day weekend, and ride the trails all winter.
