About Ashland
Asaph Whittlesey built a small cabin at the head of Chequamegon Bay in 1854, and the town that grew around it was named Ashland after Henry Clay's Kentucky home. Ashland became a busy Lake Superior port, shipping brownstone, lumber and iron ore; its giant 1916 ore dock was the last of its kind until it was taken down, and its base still stands in the harbor. Downtown, an eight-block historic district on Main Street holds the brownstone old post office, now City Hall, and the town's many murals show scenes from its past. Families swim at Maslowski Beach and Bayview Park, walk the trail that loops the city along the bay, and turn out for Bay Days in July and the Book Across the Bay ski race over the frozen bay in February.
