About Wells
Wells began as a railroad town: Colonel Clark W. Thompson, who was building the Southern Minnesota Railroad, staked it out on his own land in 1869, and it became a village in 1871. Thompson also gave the town 53 acres for a park in 1875. The 1903 depot, with its witch-hat roof, was saved from demolition by the Wells Historical Society and opened as the Wells Depot Museum in 2010. Downtown, the city-owned Flame Theatre has shown movies since 1912 under one name or another. Today people gather for Kernel Days in August, Summer in the City in June, Half Moon and Thompson parks, the city pool and golf course, and the Area Veterans Memorial Park downtown.
