About Franklin
Franklin began as a farm town south of Milwaukee: Irish settlers came in the 1830s, and the Sheehan brothers built its first log cabin on St. Martins Road in 1836. It was named for Benjamin Franklin and became a town on December 20, 1839, then grew as Dutch and German families cleared woods along the Root River for farms. To keep its land its own, Franklin became a city in 1956. Today families tour the log cabin, one-room school and old town hall at the historic village in Lions Legend Park, bring lawn chairs to the summer Sunday concerts at the bandshell there, and shop the St. Martins Fair on Labor Day weekend.
