About Greendale
Greendale was built from scratch by the federal government during the Great Depression, one of only three 'greenbelt' towns meant to give working families good homes at fair rents. Starting in 1936, crews turned 3,400 acres of farmland southwest of Milwaukee into a walkable village with a shopping street, parks and paths, and the first families moved in on May 1, 1938. Long before that, the Trimborn family burned limestone into lime in big kilns here, and their stone barn and kilns still stand. Today the village center on Broad Street is a National Historic Landmark, full of flower baskets, small shops and summer concerts in Gazebo Park.
